Water Logic versus Rock Logic and why it matters in business.
If you’ve ever wondered about the differences between businesses that fail and those that don’t then you might be ready to consider why your business certainties might become victim to Water Logic.
For a long time I believed my tendency toward flexible thinking was in fact my nemesis. A fatal breach in my otherwise success based perception of my ability. I’d learned from years of real world training that to change one’s mind was considered a weakness and I believed I needed to eradicate flexibility from my thinking.
This seemed especially so when I entered into the development of a franchise network where the fundamental element is ‘sameness’ and the key to success is ‘repeatability’.
So when I came across de Bono’s thinking on water logic I was surprised to find that my natural talent for flexibility (sometimes regarded by others as flakiness) was not so much my enemy but potentially, my superpower. A talent that could be carried like a sidearm with the power to command success.
For a long time our Australian culture has attempted to pass us through a process of funneling and sifting especially designed to ensure we can be categorized into a ‘type’. No longer is it acceptable to be good at any number of things, no matter how similar or diverse. We are now called upon to be specialists. Masters of just one thing without consideration of the multitude of areas our lives stretch across and the amount of time we have to learn.
It appears to me that we’ve typically been molded into rock-based thinking. Even though we’re encouraged to embrace diversity we actually seem to prefer certainty. We prefer to know the exact dimensions of our rock. It’s height and width. It’s weight and density. It’s shape and texture. It’s steadfastness and predictability.
The trouble is that our rock is confining. Limiting. And, without other forces to move it, it’s stuck and immobile. When I think of this in respect to the fluidity of water logic, in my mind I wonder when there might have been 12 apostles sitting steadfastly along the Great Ocean Road (yes, I’m a Victorian). Today, there are but 8 rock structures left since rock number 9 fell spectacularly into the ocean a few years ago. Conclusive proof that the landscape continues to change no mater how much confidence we have in our rock.
Simply put, it seems that using rock logic to determine our position will inevitably lead to erosion and collapse when exposed to a more fluid way of thinking. The longer we stick to our unchanging way of ‘doing business’ the greater the risk we take.
It’s because of this we must always consider where our fixed business beliefs will take us when exposed to the unrelenting nature of water logic. Water logic understands that it will flow to a natural conclusion. It will always take into account the natural terrain, the obstacles and the changing landscape. Put simply, water logic has the ability to destroy rock logic and leave it wondering what went wrong.
If you’re thinking like a rock it’s possible you’re failing to move your business in accordance with an ever-changing landscape. Perhaps it’s time to take yourself for a walk along the beach to find out just how unrelenting water logic can be and how far it will take you.
